Party with fire

Lizz and I were invited to a party just down the road from where we’re moving in the next couple of weeks. JonP is friends with a girl called Katy who lives at number 31 (we’re moving into number 37). We’ve met her a few times and we all seem to get on well enough. So that’s good. Hopefully we’ll be good friends and neighbours in a short amount of time.

Dave, JonP, and Danny Simanis were there too, as well as a whole bunch of people I didn’t know. It was cool to get to know a whole bunch of people.

There was a cool fire in the back garden which is where everyone hung out. It really was nice.

At 20:56 I decided I needed to go to a shop. I ran up the road, just over a quarter of a mile. I arrived at the shop at 21:01, the sign on the door said that the shop closes at 21:00. There’s absolutely no way that it had just been closed though. It must have been at least 5 minutes. I decided to run to the other shop, but that one was closed too. It was a complete waste of time. Oh well. My legs ache from all the running now.

Today Dave came over and Lizz cooked a fantastic Sunday dinner. It was really nice, so now she’s got to cook me one every weekend. 😉

About to begin

I signed up for the HNC in Computing the other week just before I went on holiday. The college I work in is running the course and has agreed to fully fund it for me.

The other day Dave was convinced to sign up for it too. We’ve both had our initial assessments now and got the same results. We’ve both had interviews and know what units are planned, etc. It’s looking pretty good.

The only potential problem was that there may not be enough people interested. Dave said he’s been told it’s ok now though. Someone just came into the IT Centre asking where to sign up for the course, too. So that’s another person.

Looks like I’m about to embark on another educational adventure. Should be interesting.

iPods, jobs, etc.

Yesterday Lizz and I went to Sutton with Lizz’s brother Peter. He was going to buy an 80GB iPod that was advertised in The Chad for £85. Peter and I went into the house (which was covered in fake butterflies) and had a look at it. It’s a 6th generation iPod classic. It’s in absolute mint condition, including the headphones and charger cable.

We went in with the intention of haggling them down to something like £60. The man we spoke to told us how he’d refused to sell it to one lady because she offered him £80. So, because everything was absolutely perfect Peter offered the £85 asked for and the man was very pleased. So pleased that he included a docking station with speakers and a remote for free! Not a bad deal at all. 🙂

I got a message from Rick today saying he’s got a job at E-On starting near the end of September, which is great. A couple of minutes later I got a message from my mum saying that she got a job doing some sewing at a shop in town, which is absolutely fantastic. I really think she might stick to this job. I hope she does. It’ll do her a lot of good.

So yeah, good news all round there.

Lizz is sorting out the tax for her car, which is going quite badly, but shouldn’t be too bad soon.

That’s pretty much the state of things. 🙂

It really does take a while

We’re still in the rented house at the moment. We’ve handed in our notice for the 14th of September, and the people who own the house at the moment want a moving date of September 5th. That would be ideal for us, but the solicitors seem to have ideas of their own.

Some of the searches still haven’t come back. They only organised for the mining search to be done at the end of last week. We’ve been doing this for something like 7 weeks now.

I’ve packed some boxes of my stuff, and they’re just waiting in the front room to be moved. Still got lots of other things to pack up before we go though.

I’m still hopeful that we’ll have an overlap period so we can move things directly from one house to the other. I guess I’ll just keep ringing and pestering the solicitors to get things moving!

Searches

We’ve heard from our solicitor that a couple of the searches have been completed (environmental and water). They also, on a less good note, only just informed us of another search that needs to be done. So that’s possibly going to add a bit of time to the whole process.

They’ve been informed that we’ve handed in our notice now, so they know we’re on a pretty strict time limit.

Hopefully nothing will go wrong and we’ll get everything sorted in time. I’m not really expecting it to work out quite like that though. It never does…

Reuters Bigfoot irony

I was just reading a story on Reuters about the supposed Bigfoot discovery when I noticed the list of reporters at the end included a man named Peter Henderson.

Bigfoot… Henderson… Anyone else make the connection?

Harry And The Hendersons is a show from the early 1990s that I remember watching quite a few times.

At first I thought it could be some sort of a prank by some Retuers writers (heh, that sounds funny), but then I did a quick Google search and found Peter Henderson’s blog on the Reuters website. So fair enough, just another one of those funny little coincidences. 🙂

Fully funded for my HNC

College has agreed to fully fund my attendance of the HNC in Computing. So in September I’ll begin a 2-year course. With any luck I’ll be able to finish a bit before then. I might even be able to get some accreditation for prior learning and skip a unit or two. If not then I don’t think there’ll be anything too difficult on the course anyway.

There go all my Tuesday evenings!

Done and done again

Yesterday and today I made smoke bombs with Dave. They weren’t coloured, as they should be, but there was enough smoke to call it a success. 🙂

There will be a video uploaded to YouTube whenever there’s been enough time to edit all the footage that exists.

It was quite a lot of fun to do. What can I do with all the remaining Potassium Nitrate though? :\

Almost there, moving house again

Today we got confirmation of our mortgage acceptance from Natwest. We sent a copy off to the solicitor.

I sent a message to the man whose house we’re buying asking if he had a move-in date for where he’s moving to. He said everything was going well with that and he’d be out of the current house within the month. Based on this Lizz wrote our notice letter to the landlady. I gave her a quick call too. We will be out of this house within the next month!

The man whose house we’re buying told me that he’d received the contracts to sign today too, so that’s another fairly big step taken on their end. Our solicitor got a copy of it too. They’ll check it over, give us a copy to sign, and then the whole thing’s pretty much official.

We still need to sort out getting some house insurance before the mortgage is finalised, but that’s a half-hour job online.

The end is in sight! Or rather, the new beginning.
