FoxyHistory

I’ve been working on an extension for Firefox since I had the idea for it last month. It’s basically just a way of keeping certain websites from showing up in the address bar when you type a word.

When I was typing something in the address bar to show Lizz it was bringing up Center Parcs’ website before I’d told her what the surprise was. That’s pretty much where I got the idea from.

Well, I finally got it to the point of being usable last night. It’s been a long process, but I’m proud to announce the release of FoxyHistory 0.0.3.

To use it just install it in Firefox, then put the domains you don’t want to show up in the options dialog and they shouldn’t show up any more. Simple as that. 🙂

If anyone uses it then please let me know. If you have any problems or suggestions then please leave a comment or something. I can’t make it better if I don’t know what’s wrong.

Enjoy!

One year with Lizz!

In a matter of a few short minutes Lizz and I will have been together for an entire year. That year has absolutely flown by. A lot has changed in that time, and it’s been good overall. No point thinking about the bad times when so many good times have happened, and so many more are left to come.

With the new house everything seems to be on the up. We’re pretty much settled now, just sorting out bits and bobs here and there. Ok, so we’ve got some furniture to sort out still, but that’s not so bad. We’re comfortable.

We went to Ikea today, which is what we did the first day we were together, oddly enough. Some sort of strange anniversary ritual, perhaps.

We’ve bought a bookcase and a new TV stand for the living room, as well as a bathoom storage unit. I’ve built the bookcase and the bathroom unit already, just got to sort out the TV stand tomorrow.

The phone line has been cancelled from the previous owners, finally, and ours should really be connected in the next day. I’ll be giving BT a call in the morning to make sure of that. Then I can finally call Sky and get the Internet connection back. Thanks go out to Katy for allowing us to use her wireless connection.

Yes, all in all things are going pretty darn well. 🙂

Happy 366 days Lizz! (It’s a leap year).

No button text in Firefox

I’ve been experiencing some weird behaviour with Firefox for the last few days. I’ve been writing an extension and I’ve made the mistake of testing it out on my own profile.

At some point I noticed that there was no text in buttons on websites. It’s not much of a problem on a website you’re familiar with because you still know where to click. The problem is with a new page. You don’t want to accidentally click on Cancel instead of Submit. It was also displaying every option in a select box in a big long list on the page.

I’d given up on finding a solution online after a lot of searching. I decided to create a new profile to see if it was my installation, or just my profile that was broken. My new profile in Firefox worked just fine. When I noticed that I decided to copy over some of the files from my old profile to my new one so I could keep my bookmarks, etc.

I copied a select bunch over and the button text disappeared in my new profile. I deleted it and started over again. This time I copied the files over one-by-one. When I got to prefs.js I lost my button text.

I went through prefs.js deleting likely suspects and then I stumbled upon this group of preferences:

user_pref(“nglayout.debug.disable_xul_cache”, true);
user_pref(“nglayout.debug.disable_xul_fastload”, true);
user_pref(“nglayout.debug.enable_xbl_forms”, true);

Once I commented these guys out I got my button text back.

I definitely did not add these preferences myself, and I’m not sure how they got there, but if you’re having the same problem as me then hopefully this will help you out.

Google Mail

Google Mail will be reaching 7GB of storage for users any minute now. 🙂 That’s 7168MB of email. I can’t believe I’m using 9% of it. That’s quite a lot of email to just have kicking around.

Then again, I have had the account open for a pretty long time now (4 years and 15 days).

How to buy a House

“Stressful at times with long spells of waiting, totally worth it in the end.”

How I did it: We paid a lot of money to lots of people and got ourselves into a huge amount of debt (it’s called a mortgage). Now we own the house!

It took a lot of persistence with solicitors. Without constantly prompting them and giving them deadlines we wouldn’t have got it done quite as quickly.

We also called in a lot of favours with friends when it came to moving things. We also made sure we had a bit of money left over to splash around in an emergency, should the unexpected happen.

Lessons & tips: Solicitors will always slow you down. Don’t go with one who is miles away just because they’re a bit cheaper. It’ll be expensive anyway because of all the hidden charges. It’d be more useful to have a solicitor nearby so you have someone to go in and shout at. 😉

Try to get in touch with the people who currently own the house. That way the solicitors can’t obscure details. You can find out exactly what’s been done from both ends.

Try not to get too stressed, and don’t take your frustration out on the wrong people. For the most part they will be doing their best to get it over with.

Resources: Use the telephone! Make lots of calls to your solicitor, the estate agent, and get in touch with the people you’re buying the house from if you can.

It took me 9 weeks.

It made me Happy and tired

Fucking Wonderful

Everything has been set for at least a week now. I’ve booked Monday off work so I can be there to move the heavy furniture into the new house. Lizz has booked Tuesday off to sort out most of the rest of the little stuff.

I’ve had to re-organise the work patterns of 4 people to pull this off.

Everything hinged on us having a van on Monday. This was assured by Dave as it’s his brother-in-law who was going to be helping out. Today, that’s 3 days before the move, he’s decided he’s not going to do that any more.

His reasoning is to do with pay. If he did this as a favour to us then he would be a bit out of pocket. That’s what a favour is.

To me it’s just fucking downright rude. He agreed to do it, he said ok. You can’t just pull out of something like that at short notice. If he didn’t want to do it then that’s fine. We would have happily organised a van, or whatever in the time we’ve been resting assured that it’s all sorted.

Unreliable people cause nothing but fucking trouble, and it pisses me off.

I don’t want to sound like I’m being ungrateful, I was very appreciative of his help. It just makes it all the worse when it goes completely tits up.

I’m so fucking angry right now. My weekend will now be spent chasing up another van, and someone to drive it so that I can still move into the house as planned.

Thanks a fucking bunch. Twat.

A week today

We’ll be getting the keys one week from today. It’s about time!

I’ve still got to call the gas/electricity, water, council tax, mobile phone company, bank, credit card, etc. etc. etc. to update the address. That’ll be fun.

I’ve got the day off work next week so I’ll be able to get all the big things moved in. I don’t think we’ll get it all done in the first couple of days, but certainly by the end of the following weekend. 🙂

Neeeearly there!

Rock Band

Lizz and I have bought Rock Band on the PS3. It came out today and it got delivered today! 🙂

We went home at lunch time to collect the package from over the road where it got delivered to. I spent the majority of my lunch time setting up the guitar (the batteries are behind a screw-on plastic plate), and half of the drum kit (that’ll take a bit of time later on). We’ve set up our characters and we were just coming up with a band name when we realised it was time to come back to work! 🙁

As soon as we get home we’ll be playing Rock Band! 😀 Can’t wait!

Moving date changed again

Just to go and prove how annoying it can be to organise moving house we’ve had to change the moving date again. It’s now been changed to Monday the 22nd. Apparently the people we’re buying from could not make it on the Friday before, so it’s been delayed again.

Hopefully this is the last hiccup though. Now we should just have to sit back, let everyone know what’s happening, and then move everything we own!

Piece of cake.

CERN LHC startup

CERN’s (European Organisation for Nuclear Research – it’s a proper acronym in French, if you use the old name) Large Hadron Collider should have started up by now. I was hoping to watch the beginning of it using the webcast, but unfortunately I can’t seem to get to their website at the moment.

There’s been a huge fuss over this experiment beginning because some retards think it will be the end of the world. The project is basically just there to crash particles into each other at ridiculously high speed in extremely cold (almost absolute zero) temperatures. The aim is to discover new types of currently hypothetical particles that explain why objects have mass, among other things.

Update
In the time it’s taken me to write that I’ve managed to load CERN’s page and find that the first beam in the LHC has already gone all the way around the 27km particle accelerator. They haven’t started colliding things yet, so don’t worry. The world has not ended yet. 😉
