Cluj airport

At the moment I’m sitting in Cluj airport using the free Wi-fi.

The suitcase is checked in and we’re just waiting for boarding time to arrive.

There’s a baby crying at the moment and I have a sinking feeling that it’ll continue until we get back to Luton in a few hours.

I’m sad about leaving Romania, but it’ll also be a bit nice to be home again.

Maximo Park, Romania

On Wednesday Lizz and I went to see Maximo Park with the tickets I got for my birthday.

We were joined there by Dave, Hayley, Gordon, Vlad, Matt Ridgill, Jess, Jeanette, Ben (Jeanette’s son), and last and least Peter.

Support was provided by some band I don’t remember, then Bombay Bicycle Club standing in for The Noisettes. A definite improvement in my mind.

Maximo Park were absolutely fantastic. I knew all of the songs, obviously, and they played a really good selection. There was also a new song that’s not on even the newest album, so that was kinda cool, although nobody knew it.

It’s currently rated in my top 5 gigs ever. Possibly as high as third.

Yesterday I began packing my case (a large carry-on bag). I’ve got pretty much everything I need in it now. Just need to put my washbag in the big case and I should be sorted. Lizz is taking up the rest of the big case with some insane amount of clothes she won’t wear and doesn’t need. No doubt there are at least 3 pairs of shoes going on this journey with her.

We’re being picked up from the house at 3:45am to get to Luton airport in time to catch our flight to Cluj. When we get there we’ve got a minibus to Targu Jiu where we’ll be staying.

I’m really looking forward to going away with a bunch of people. Especially since I haven’t seen most of them properly for quite a while.

It’sa going to be a good week! 😀

6 months of employment

I realised that I’ve been employed at my current job for very nearly 6 months now (on the 17th).

I think I’ve settled in pretty well. I have a good idea about how to get around the system, although I still learn new things every day.

I’ve had some interesting projects that are fairly big, and some that affect literally every single customer, and that’s not a small number of people.

I’m really enjoying my time there every day. Sometimes I get a bit overwhelmed when I get a lot of tasks to do and also get asked to iron out bugs in previous code, but it’s all part of the job, and I think I’m getting better at it. I don’t mind if I spend a couple of hours on work when I’m at home because my boss has always been flexible with me taking time off and things like that.

I’m sure the next 6 months will fly by just as quickly, and I’m looking forward to the challenges and opportunities they’ll bring. 🙂

Crank

I haven’t seen the second Crank film, but yesterday I realised that Crank films probably came about in this way:

Jason Statham: Transporter films are probably the most ridiculous action films that could ever exist.
Ridiculous Director: You wanna bet? 😀

New TV

On Monday I bought a new 37 inch flat screen TV. It’s 1080p and my PS3 looks absolutely awesome on it.

I’ve hooked my old computer up to it and I’m using XBMC as a media centre interface. It’s awesome.

I have the computer set up to log in automatically and to launch Vuze (formerly Azureus) and XBMC straight away. Vuze automatically starts downloading any torrent file I put on my desktop.

I need to write a few scripts for XBMC to automate and fix a few little things and then I should hardly ever have to touch it again!

Primer is a great film

I watched the film Primer for the third time today.

I just can’t accurately describe how good it is.

It’s extremely technical and doesn’t try very hard to dumb things down, which I like.

It’s also impressive that the film’s cast and crew is somewhere around 20-30 people or so, and most of them know each other or are related to someone else in the group.

If you’re struggling to think of something actually interesting to watch then give it a go. Don’t be too worried if you’re a bit confused by it at certain points, you’ll get it later on in the film, or you’ll get it on the next time you watch it. 🙂

Bank holiday weekend

Today was the first day back after a lovely bank holiday weekend.

After work on Friday a few work folks went for a couple of drinks. At about 8 everyone but Rik and I had gone. We ended up going into Walkabout for a couple of drinks, then over to The Social for quite a few more. It was nice to get to know someone from work a bit more socially rather than just talking about work. I ended up catching the bus home at 1:30am. I got home at 2:40 after a long walk in the dark.

I spent most of Saturday (5.5 hours) digging up the bottom of the garden as part of my grand garden scheme. 🙂

Sunday morning rolled around and Lizz wanted to go for a walk. We made our way to Clumber Park and walked around the lake. We took lots of pictures that I’ll never get around to uploading anywhere. I showed Lizz where my nan, granddad, and uncle’s ashes are scattered.

After the walk around we decided to have scones with cream and jam.

We went over to Lizz’s parents’ house to have a lovely beef dinner followed by half playing a complicated board game.

After that I went to see Dave and Helen so I could eat some of their most excellent baking (more scones, flapjack, and a cake). Lizz came around for a while, and spent most of that time cleaning up. o_O

Monday consisted of a trip to Toby Carvery with Lizz, Dave, Hayley and a girl named Cat. It’s a nice new place. We had to wait over an hour for our table, but they gave us free dessert, so it’s ok. Although, they didn’t have the dessert I wanted, as is usually the case. 🙁

After nipping home for a couple of hours I went to Dave’s house to watch the original Star Wars film in celebration of May the 4th. 🙂

Today is cinco de mayo, but I’m not in Mexico so I don’t get the day off. I wonder how this swine flu “pandemic” is affecting the celebrations.

Weird phone behaviour

I woke up today to find my phone had decided to install an application from the Android Market by itself. It’s one I’ve heard of before but never installed. It basically mimicks a shotgun by making a noise when you move your phone.

Needless to say, I uninstalled it and I’m not very happy that it could get installed in the first place. I’ll investigate later. Must be other people with this happening to them.
