I work at a place called Ancis. I started working there on July 22nd 2002. I earn £3.66 per hour. I work 12 hour long shifts from either 7am until 7pm or 7pm until 7am. I work 3 days then have 3 off, then work 3 nights, then have 3 off. That cycle continues 365 days a year unless I take one of my 20 days off. So that’s 20 days off per year, including all bank holidays and special occasions of any kind.
I recently worked Christmas Eve night from 7pm until 7am for £3.66 per hour. Now THAT is some shitty pay for a night shift in itself. It’s also shit pay for Christmas Eve in itself. Both of them together… That’s a ridiculous wage.
Around about the same time that I joined Ancis a person called Craig also joined Ancis. He’d been to university and he had a couple of Microsoft Office User Specialist certificates, but a trained goldfish could get these certificates with enough practice.
No more than 2 months after we’d been there he was promoted along with Olly to Senior Operation Support Technician. Olly is cool, he works hard, he goes further than he has to and he doesn’t mind helping out. He’s also funny and generous too. He’d been there just over a year by this point and fully deserved the promotion. Craig on the other hand dodges work wherever possible, the work he does is barely even completed, when it is completed it’s generally to a lower standard than it should or could be. There is no way any manager would think that he needs promoting after such a short amount of time. It’s completely stupid.
A couple of days ago Olly told me that Craig was being promoted again… That’s just not right. Two promotions ahead of me, one ahead of Olly who had been there a year longer than him and worked to a much higher standard. What the fuck?
So I told David, who instantly disagreed with the decision. He wrote an email of complaint to the Managing Director – Rob. I suggested not actually sending the email until we heard from a different source that the promotion was actually taking place.
Today David spoke to Martin, our immediate boss, who confirmed the promotion to him.
Then David was fixing a problem with a server with Martin and Martin made a suggestion to a problem. David made a better suggestion and Martin said “Yes, that’s the answer I wanted to hear.” Then walked off again. A few minutes later he came back and told David that Craig was no longer being promoted.
When David asked why Martin told him that all would “become clear.”
So it sounds like David may well be getting promoted instead… Or some other interesting development is taking place at any rate. I hope David is being promoted. It could be useful having him in a more senior position, even though he’s been there less time than everyone else there (maybe barring Skander) he definitely deseres it more than Craig does. I think Olly should also be promoted to a higher position but I’d prefer David to be Team Leader as he actually seems to have the balls to talk back to Rob… Well he doesn’t seem too, he has them. When they were trying to cheat him out of six weeks of wages he told Rob that he quit, he had several arguments with Rob and finally got his money from Rob along with an apology. Damn fucking right too.
We need someone who will do that as team leader, to sort of help out the lower people.
I will quite probably never be promoted as long as I work there. I really don’t think Rob likes me at all. I’ll always be someone to take advantage of quickly when some shitty work needs doing. Maybe if I get this server up and running under RedHat and sharing our one internet connection throughout the company he might see that I could be a valuble asset with some skills that nobody else there has and might decide to keep me happy enough to not quit. Of course, this is only a maybe, I’ll more than likely just end up training EVERYBODY how to use Linux for my standard wage, writing shitty MS Word documents for people so they can see how to reconnect to the internet. I might install it in text mode just to make it harder for them. Lamers.
Anyway, Craig’s no longer being promoted and there will be some interesting news in the next couple of days.
Oh yeah, I realise that nobody will read this except me, but I’d like to have this as something I can go back and read through when I get older and I want to remember the days I earned 1/5 of what I will be earning. So this is probably going to keep being updated for as long as I use computers and have this domain. I’ll probably end up losing all of these entries in a hosting tranferal or something. I must remember to keep my own backups.
Later.
