The PDC and some other random stuff

Well, I’ve been sat in this very chair in front of this one screen for about 99% of the time I’ve been here so far. I don’t imagine it will be any different in 2 hours when my shift is over.

I’ve successfully disinfected the Primary Domain Controller (PDC) of one of our customers. This task apparently had to wait until we had a long weekend to do it. I only had to restart the computer 3 times during the whole process. For those 4 or 5 minutes in total the people who would have been trying to log on (probably somewhere around zero of them) would have had to have used their secondary server to authenticate themselves and join the network… The PDC isn’t needed that desperately, the only thing it does is authenticate users who are joining the domain. Each site has a Backup Domain Controller (BDC) which replicates the information from the PDC every 2 hours or so. This is incase the PDC ever breaks for a certain amount of time. The users are still able to log on thanks to us adding their local server as their Secondary WINS Server. Continue reading
